Cutting Board Care

STEP ONE: WASH

Wash your board with water (soap as well if you like), to include both sides and every edge. Be sure to wash all sides of your board! Many people only wash the top surface and that leads to warping. When the water interacts with the grain of the wood, it causes swelling- you don’t want uneven swelling.

STEP TWO: DRY

Immediately dry the board with a towel, removing all moisture from the surface. Set the board on its edge, so that the large, flat areas are facing out, and allow to dry completely overnight.

STEP THREE AND FOUR: OIL AND WAX

Once the board is dry, apply a light coat of food-grade mineral oil to the surface. Make sure to coat all surfaces of the board with an even, light coat- we aren’t looking for puddles here, but we do want to ensure oil penetration to protect the wood beneath. Sit the board on its side once again and let it soak in the oil for about 3 hours.

After that, its time to apply the wax. Once again, apply an even coat of wax on every surface of the board with a microfiber cloth. This creates a barrier that protects your board.

The board can be used in a few hours, but for extra shine and protection, allow the board to dry overnight on its side and buff the wax off with a clean cloth.

If you don’t have oil or wax lying around, we offer our shop-made conditioning wax here.

Once done, the board should repel water and bead it off nicely. Following these care instructions will keep your board healthy and happy for years to come!

Happy cooking!
